Bobbies on the Beat

The purpose of the proposal is to employ uniformed police officers to provide a high visibility foot patrol.

The officers are in addition to the ward officers who police the area and who have additional responsibility outside the NDC area. The Bobbies support the force policing aim of preventing and detecting crime, and provide reassurances to residents and local business people, thereby reducing the `fear of crime`.

The Bobbies work with other agencies to bring about a safer community, and make and maintain contact with residents and local groups to improve police community relations. They provide a presence in which the public is able to identify with the local officers, and put structures into place which enable the community to feel confident in being able to report crime and other incidents, which they were unable to do in the past.

The project involves recruiting the right officers for the role, identifying working practices and an exit strategy to absorb the Bobbies back into mainstream policing.
